Admissions
Determined Admission Arrangements for September 2025
Godwin Junior School is a community school, which means the London Borough of Newham is our Admission Authority.
All applications for our school must be made through the London Borough of Newham’s Education Access, not our school.
The law requires that all schools must have admission arrangements that clearly set out how children will be admitted, including the criteria that will be applied if there are more applications than places at the school. Admission arrangements are determined by Admission Authorities.
All Admission Authorities must determine (i.e. formally agree) admission arrangements annually, even if they have not changed from previous years and a consultation has not been required. Admission Authorities must determine admission arrangements for entry in September 2025, by 24 February 2024. The London Borough of Newham is the admission authority for all maintained schools located in Newham, with the exception of the faith schools who are their own admission authorities. Godwin Junior School is a London Borough of Newham maintained school, meaning we must use their admission arrangements.
For any proposed changes to the existing determined arrangements, a formal consultation must take place and must be for a minimum of 6 weeks and must take place between 1 October and 31 January of the school year before those arrangements are to apply. This consultation period allows parents, other schools, religious authorities and the local community to raise any concerns about proposed arrangements.

You can object to these arrangements or the arrangements of any school by referring to the Office of the Schools Adjudicator. Objections to admission arrangements for entry in September 2025 must have been referred to the Adjudicator by 15 May 2024. Any decision of the Adjudicator must be acted on by the admission authority and admission arrangements amended accordingly.

Infant to Junior School Transition
We admit children in September into our Year Three classes and would very much welcome you applying for a place at our school. To do this, you must follow the correct process for your child’s age as detailed below.
If your child was born between 1 September 2017 and 31 August 2018 and attends an infant school, you will need to apply for a Year 3 junior place in an infant or primary school for September 2025. If they attend a primary school, NOT an infant school, you have the choice of your child staying at their primary school or applying to change to another school. If they are happy in their primary school you do not need to take any action.
If your child lives in Newham you will need to apply via London Borough of Newham. But if your child lives outside Newham, but you want him or her to go to school in Newham, you will need to apply through the local authority in the borough you live in.
Remember, if your child attends an infant school you must apply for a place, even if your child:
-
Already attends the infant school linked to your preferred junior school
OR
-
They have a brother or sister who attends the junior school
Before submitting a junior school application we strongly recommend all families read the Autumn 2025 edition of the local authority's 'Staring School in Newham’ guide and find out information about the school you are interested in.

The vast majority of our children come from Woodgrange Infant School; however, we are pleased to admit children who have not attended Woodgrange. We work closely with local infant schools in order to ensure a smooth transition for children. This involves our Year Three teachers visiting the pupils whilst they are still in Year Two at Woodgrange and also all children who will be joining us spending time at Godwin in the summer term before they become Godwin pupils. This has proven to be very successful in terms of reducing children’s anxiety about changing schools.
Year Two parents and carers are invited to visit our school in the autumn term to support them choose a school which best meets their child's needs. We then invite them in to a meeting during the summer term in which the Head Teacher and Year 3 team inform parents and carers about the organisation and curriculum of the school and are pleased to answer questions.
In Year admissions into primary school (aka mid-phase and mid-term admissions)
If your family arrives in Newham during the school year 2024/2025 and your child needs a school place in the borough you must complete an In Year form naming your preferred schools and you are usually given a place within 10 days. The place offered may not be at the school you prefer as that school may not have a suitable place available.
Please click here to access this form.
Fair Access
The law requires that each local authority must have a Fair Access Protocol (FAP), agreed with the majority of schools in its area to ensure that for In-Year-admissions unplaced-children, especially the most vulnerable, are offered a place at a suitable school as quickly as possible. In agreeing a protocol, the local authority must ensure that no school - including those with available places - is asked to take a disproportionate number of children who have been excluded from other schools, or who have challenging behaviour. Godwin Junior School has signed up to the London Borough of Newham’s Fair Access Protocol.

Secondary Transition
If your child was born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014, you will need to apply for a secondary school place for September 2025 unless the child is on roll at an All Through school (Chobham Academy, Langdon Academy or School 21) as they will automatically move into Year 7.
All Year 7 applications for September 2025 must be made through the family’s home local authority. If your child lives in Newham you will need to apply via the London Borough of Newham. But if your child lives outside Newham, but you want him or her to go to school in Newham, you will need to apply through the local authority in the borough you live in .
National closing date for on time Year 7 applications 31st October 2024.
National offer date for on time Year 7 applicants 1st March 2025.
Before submitting a Year 7 application we strongly recommend all families read the autumn 2024 edition of the local authority's ‘Staring Secondary School’ guide and find out information about the school you are interested in. If possible look at their virtual tours. Please click here to access the 'Starting Secondary School' booklet.
To maximise your opportunities of getting a place at one of your preferred secondary schools name six schools with at least one being your local school.

· Has a brother or sister attending the school;
· Lives in the school's priority area (for Sarah Bonnell and Chobham Academy)
· Attends a link school (for Stratford School Academy only)
